I am just going through yesterday's mail and see Standard Parking is raising the rate here by almost 10% and that's in a recession year. Does anyone know of any alternatives nearby?

Why WOULDN'T you report a crime? I don't understand. If you have a photo, post it on the internet. Send it to MCO, he'll post it on his site. Why support anybody who thinks it's okay to deface property. If you don't report it I think you are guilty too.

What's your dilemma? You sound so shocked but you're not reporting it? Why not?

If you're friends with the criminal, it's their problem to worry about you. Are you trying to avoid embarrassing a person filled with hate? Report it. Show the photo.

Are you a child? I can't think of any other reason you might be hesitant to report it. PLEASE tell me why you hesitate.
 

yes, if you saw this crime committed, by all means report it to security, report it to the parking valet's manager, report it to the police.

To Aug. 12 blogger and others who tried to spread fear about assessments being raised: blow it out your a_ _. Got my letter from the board today and NO increase in monthly assessments for 2010. Spreading fear might work for the really old and the not too smart re Obama's healthcare plan, but guess what? It doesn't work here anymore.

The only reason there is no assessment increase is 2 fold: 1) they are eliminating / closing the lobby meetingroom supposedly to save money but also to cancel social events and regular committee and board meetings therefore making it more difficult to participate in your association and 2.) they have chosen to postpone critical maintenance of the buildings such as extertor concrete work (including but not limited to exposed re-bar & falling concrete and rusting railings) and other work which is vital to the maintenance and intregity of the building.

Applaud her? Yeah right. Someday the shi* is going to hit the fan probably in the form of a special assessment. Where you here for the last one that had to raise over $2.5 million????

Maybe you should ask Donna why she let her friend Kimmel aka Dr. Ho get away without paying assessmetns on his combined 3 bedroom unit for over a year with the association owed over $15,000 and under illinois law is only able to collect 6 months worth of back assessments if the unit goes into foreclosure or his sold? The rest of us idots will have to make up the deficit for that "favor."

I also think it's great we don't have higher assesments. If they come in the future, that's that it's been a while since we've had a raise to pay. Your heart seems very full of hate. Seems like the laundry room / fitness center is really F'd up. It is now more then 200% over schedule and I would like to see how much we are over budget.

Workers have been starting early (THEY STARTED AT 6:15AM TODAY POUNDING AND DRILLING ) And yes I called the guard to make a complaint!! That's ridiculous.

They have been starting around 7:00AM for the last week and also on Saturday.
 

I was perusing the 2010 budget and noticed that "laundry income" was budgeted for 2009 at $132,000, but for 2010 it is budgeted for $200,000 -- a 51% increase over the prior year. Does tht mean we can expect the charge for a wash and dry will be going up 50% or more???? I hope that's not the case. That's another trick the Finance committee used

P.S. Most of teh board memebers don't care - because they have their own washers and dryers in thier unit.

My opinion ona few things, for what it's worth:

The washers & dryers are cheaper than at your last place. So be it, but, if the budget is correct and they are going up I'm not happy.

KCG - Laptops. I hate them. I prefer my standard computer with desk, chair and printer.
Had a laptop years ago, didn't like it. But, to each their own. Hope you find a good one that u like.

Flu shots will be given free on September 29 at the Cultural Center from 9AM to 3PM. This is the regular flu shot not the H1N1 type which will not be available from what I have read until mid October or November.

It is insane to not raise assessments by the cost of living. Given how, at a minimum, the City is adding or raising fees and how I'm sure the D&K and service employees would like to see a little extra in their pay envelope, to not plan for these and other sure to come increases is too much like the way Social Security is run - and we all know the end of that story.

I'm already tired of all the stuff on Ted Kennedy. The Kennedy's were probably the most corooked family of politicians this country has ever seen. Sorry for his family's loss - but... I'll bite my tongue.
 

Seems like the "Cash for Clunkers" program was a disaster.

1.) Instead of expiring in Novemeber as planned it was quickly terminated this past Monday.

2.) 61% of the money was spent on cars made by foreign auto manufacturers - thereby not necessarily putting Americans to work.

3.) And the biggest bombshell!!! If you received the $3,500 - $4,500 government cash for clunkers, it must be reported as ordinary income on your 2009 tax return. Just wait for the angry taxpayers when they see an additonal tax liability of $1,000 - $2,000 when they file their return - (of course depending on your individual tax bracket).

Nice program Obama! Now we are an additional 3 billion in debt.

I'll give the praise to Ted Kennedy that he deserves. He remained relevant throughout his career, serving our country tirelessly. He clearly was a wonderful friend and a great father to his own children and his fatherless nieces and nephews. His staff loved him and he was an inspiration to those who worked for him. He believed one could achieve anything with hard work and focus. We need more inspiring people like him.

What do YOU mean by asking that question? It makes you sound suspicious because most would say "there's a new employee !" not "what's up with that?" A new guy is working in the grocery store today, did you ask "what's up with that?"

I took a sneak peek at the new laundry room this past Saturday and have to admit it looks pretty darn good so far. But I can see where some might not appreciate the "coziness" of the new configuration.

Hopefully it will be up and running by the weekend. But I guess the fitness room will not be online until late September - due to the late delivery of the equipment.

New levies on carbonated drinks, some candy and alcohol will hit Tuesday

Holding bags filled with health food and sports drinks, many of the shoppers at the Dominick's grocery in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood seemed oblivious to the increase in the state taxes paid on candy, soft drinks and some alcoholic beverages set to kick in this week.

But beginning Tuesday, lovers of carbonated drinks, candy made without flour and alcohol will see price increases as revisions to the state sales tax go into effect. The extra money is expected to pay for repairs to state roads, schools and bridges.

News of the increase confused consumers and some tax experts by the way certain candy items were re-categorized as general merchandise rather than as candy, which is taxed at a lower rate.

Under the revisions, candy items bought in Chicago without flour are subject to the full 10.25 percent general merchandise sales tax. Meanwhile, candy made with flour will retain its current 2.25 percent tax rate. Most carbonated soft drinks have also been tossed from the food category and subject to the 10.25 percent rate in the city.

Shopper Mo Zinich was a rare exception, knowing about the candy/not-candy debate, but still confused about how this would affect her bottom line at the regis- ter.

"Personally, I find it very confusing," said Zinich, adding that unaware consumers will wind up paying more money without really knowing why.

"If I'm watching my pennies and dimes, like a lot of people are doing at the moment ... I won't know [that] what I'm buying is going to be more expensive than really what I anticipate it to be," she said.

With his 12-pack of cherry-flavored Diet Dr Pepper tucked under his arm, Alan Lewis was unaware of the new tax. "I'm lucky. I'm in a position to afford it. Will it change my buying habits? Probably not," Lewis said.

Realtor Doug Ireland said he supports the tax, saying it's worth the benefits.

"I believe taxes are a good thing, overall," he said. "You miss your money in the long run anyway. What's another 60 cents or 2 percent? You always make do with whatever you get paid, right?"

Soft drinks and sweets are quickly becoming tax targets nation- wide as childhood obesity in- creases and government revenue decreases.

Health teacher Jamie Johnson was torn about the new tax, hoping it would deter children gorging themselves on fatty snacks and drinks for lunch, but she also is convinced that the higher taxes won't keep junk-food lovers from stocking up.

"I see [children] drink the soda and eat the candy every day they come back from lunch," Johnson said. "People are going to pay that tax. If they want candy and soft drinks, they're going to pay it."

Zinich said the new tax would probably have little effect on obesity.

"I don't really think if it's more expensive that's going to help people losing weight. If it's something I want, I'm probably going to get it," she said.

Lewis seemed unconcerned with the tax on his soft drinks. "It's still cheaper [to buy it at a grocery] than buying it at lunch," he said.

So I'm sitting here in the warm (downright hot, actually) Italian sun, as the grape vines get closer to harvest, and looking over the new NTCA budget. As Scooby-Doo used to say, "Wha-huh??"

How many years has it been since the prior (2) assessment increases? How do they match up with the local cost-of-living numbers?

What is the "NEW" laundry equipment expense of $55,000? Does it refer to new equipment purchases? Or are we returning to the costly lease arrangement we had before 2001? If so, that would explain the huge increase in laundry income. Otherwise, an equipment purchase would come out of Reserves.

As I recall, John Leonard was a big proponent of keeping the earlier leasing arrangement when he was on the Board; I think it was a sweetheart deal back then - hmmm, could there be a new payback situation here? Just sayin'


Repairs and Maintenance - A $25,000 decrease? Granted it's due to losing the Meeting Room rent, but to say that those costs will stay the same is short-sighted.

Why is Television Income and Expense not a one-to-one offset with income? What's with the budgeted extra $6000 in TV income?

Why is laundry electricity broken out from electricity? Why are there no expected increases in Electricity or Water/Sewer, let alone scavenger?

I see Levin not only made a nice chunk this year but that they they raised his budget by $10000. And you'll note the supposed one-to-one offset of Legal Collections Income vs. Expense is $10000 higher! Hmm, $40000 in income but Levin only gets $30000? I...don't....think....so.

Office rent down 21% - is that the loss of the meeting room? If so, I don't see the claimed $40000 saving in the cover letters, only $11000. The CAM charge is down 10% but even so, the total decrease for those two items (Office Rent & CAM) is only $30000, and Leonard is claiming a $40000 savings. What gives?

Under the line items Repairs/Mtnce Reimbursed and Glazing Recovery (in Other Income), the total is $48000, yet in the line items of Services to Residents (under Repairs/Maintenance) and Windows/Glass (under Supplies), they only total $28000, a $20000 difference. As labor is covered under Services to Residents, what gives?

1) Touches you without your permission.

2) Blocks your path or the enterence to any building or vehicle.

3) Follows behind, ahead, or alongside while you are walking away.

4) Uses profane or abusive language before, during, or after solicting.

5) Makes any statement or gesture which makes you feel fearful.

"I think anybody who, like I do, commutes on the Kennedy on a daily basis knows exactly what stress is," he says, of his daily home-to-work commute on Chicago's expressway that extends from the Chicago Loop to O'Hare International Airport. "It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to several centuries—at least subjectively."

But more pressing factors make Chicago for the second year in a row the country's most stressful city. Crowding, poor air quality, a high 11 percent unemployment rate and free-falling home values have created a cocktail of constant worry affecting many in the Windy City.

Went down to the laundry room around 9:40 in the west tower with a couple of loads and I was turned away. No hot water and the workers were still putting it togther. UGH
 

Certain Republicans don't want the President of the U.S. to speak to school kids and encourage them to study hard. Their reasons: they worry what he'll say; they don't want him taking time in the school day; they didn't like that the White House suggested lesson plans.

Those Republicans make asses out of themselves. Do they really think he'll talk about Healthcare to kids? or sow the seeds of "Socialism?" Come on. HE'S NOT A SOCIALIST. How long a speech do they pretend to fear he'll give? If McCain (and I like McCain) wanted to talk to school kids about brave soldiers, and ask kids to write a paragraph about courage in our "just" wars, they'd kiss his behind, welcome him with music, flags and stop all classes so kids could listen.
The Lesson Plans were SUGGESTIONS to get kids thinking and writing -- that's what they're supposed to do in school, right? (I've worked with teachers, sometimes they like suggestions.)

Bush asked schools to send kids home with tin cans to collect for "kids in Afghanistan." Didn't that imply that the child, his parents and school bought into that war? My niece came to me for a contribution but neither she nor her fellow-collectors knew much, if anything, about what they were collecting for, but they got "points" for money collected. How clever.

And don't forget both President Bushes talked to kids in the school room -- and that was great. The first Bush went on satellite to talk about the dangers of drugs; Bush II regularly read and chatted with kids in their rooms.

It's beyond shameful that some far-right thinkers are so crass and rude in the name of their political beliefs. It's beneath a parent to act that way. For the past eight years, weren't they screaming "Respect the office of the President, even if you don't like the man." Well? Of course there's another unmentionable reason they don't want Obama to talk to their kids directly: He's a likeable guy. Are they afraid to let their kids admire (and even "like") a Black man who happens to be President? I hate to think people are still that racist but it's a fair question given the situation.

I've talked to a few Repubs. about this and they laugh, think it's amusing that this has been so stirred up. They're proud of it?

Having good discussions about differences in politics is one thing, trying to prevent children from hearing an encouraging word about studying hard from the Pres. is another. Perhaps those parents are lacking eduction themselves.
My eyes have been opened to the sleazy things the "right" will do to bring down a decent man. SHAME ON THEM.

I've not been this angry about politics in a while, but I will not go tit for tat about this on the blog.

Those same spiteful Repubs. are the self-proclaimed holier-than-thou Christians too. What a laugh.

We snuck into the laundry room last night. Thought that their grand opening of today was not going to happen unless they worked all night but I doubt that. It does look different though. Very different. Don't mind the change actually. Hopefully the new design will be suitable for all. It looks a little tight in there but realistically who stays there long enough but just to change loads and fold clothes. Cross your fingers it works out well.
 

Yeah look at obama's socialistic agenda. The economy keeps getting worse and he can no longer blame "W" for digging us deeper into a hole.

His poll numbers are dropping faster then an old women's boobs.

I did my first load in the new laundry room this morning.

Just some observations.

The wash cycle ("Medium" soiled level) is 10 minutes longer then the old ones.

The dry cycle was 15 minutes less then the old ones - 45 min vs 60. min.

At 7;30 - 9:00 he laundry room was packed and we were kind of bumping in to each other. But I think some were in there just to observe and watch their wash thru the washer window.

It is not as convenient to take the west clothes over to the dryers as in the past.

There are no hangers or rods from the ceiling so you can't hang your dried clothes on hangers. Maybe those will be added.

I did take a trip over to the east tower to add money to my smart card and the place was deserted. I assume some of the residents in the "new laundry room" are from the east tower.

Also, when you put in your detergent, bleach and softener in the pull out trays in the washer - you have to be careful. Each compartment in the tray is small and I did spill a few drops of detergent on the floor. So be careful.

Overall very pleased. The clothes seemed clean and they were dry on the 45 min dryer cycle.

Curious - does anyone else have comments on using the new laundry room?

One thing I did notice is that you have to be somewhat careful filling each compartment in the pull out tray for the washers. But overall I would give it 3 1/2 stars and it will probably go up once it is completed with the trim, counters, baseboards, tables and chairs.

But so far I am very pleased with the actual equipment.

Hopefully they will be less prone to breakdowns vs the old equipment plus they should save us a lot of money since front loads by nature are a lot more energy efficient.

What did everyone think of Obama's sppech last night? Seems like more of the same. he said most of the coast of his new health care initiative is going to come out of cost savings and inefficiences of Medicare / Medicaid. If that were true, why hasn't the government done that already?

Glad someone missed us but we don't read daily, just when Obama scores big and we think about how you anti-Obamas are going to spin it.
 

No serious-minded, reasonably intelligent person believes that Obama's healthcare program will not add to the deficit, nor that stopping waste and fraud in Medicare will produce enough savings to pay for this new program.

It immediately begs the question,if Government has already produced massive waste and fraud, are we to believe that a new and larger program would be free of it?.

Most germaine to why the Federal Government should stay out of healthcare is because it already has a history of massive cost overruns in the industry. When Medicare's Part A was passed in 1965. Government experts projected costs to rise to $9 billion by 1990. Total costs actually reached $67 billion. In 1987, Medicaid added a special hospital subsidy to its coverage which was projected to cost $100million By 1992, costs stood at $11 billion per year.

I understand that things happen beyond the Government's control, but these overuns are not small, indeed they are huge.

If the politicians succeed at taking over healthcare, the cost overruns will not be in the millions or even billions of dollars. Cost overuns will be in the trillions of dollars.

In his speech Obama stated that people would be forced to purchase health care just like states compel you to purchase auto insurance. The difference is that driving a car is a privilege, not a right, so of course you can be compelled to purchase auto insurance. But can you force an individual to purchase health insurance? Can you force a person to be insured against their will? Their is that little thing called the constitution. Can this pass? Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness?

Also, do we want everyone covered? The cold hard fact is that we need Darwinism to avoid massive overcrowding of the planet. We need people to not have access to first rate medical facilities. We need people to die to make room for others. It is unfortunate, but it is a reality.

why is it that the west tower still does not have the laundry card machine? the project was over a month late and management still could not coordinate the ordering of this machine...I'm sure the lead times for this equipment is weeks and not months. The mismanagement of this building never ceases to amaze me.

Two different issues phl.

1) laundry room a success i.e. looks good and works well.

2) laundry room late and still not complete, not a success-which led to my initial post. my so called whining is a result of years of little things building up with a board that can not manage this amazing architectural gem--one which they are the stewards of.

If they can't manage the simple little renovations, how are they going to handle the larger ones that will have greater ramifications on the building as a whole?
